Gala Happenings in the N'Hood! GermanParistown is once again on the map! Mayor Jerry and Jim King stopped by to see and send best wishes to the GPNA. We had to shoo them away since there honestly was not room for them--the place was packed! The fun thing about this art work is that it stuns anyone walking by. Everyone is affected, and that's the point. Jim King promised his unrelenting support of our Association, and Jerry blessed us as only he can. Audio upload sometime soon.

Inspired by the Frogtown theme, Local Artisan Aron Conaway is going to great lengths (and heights) to promote Frogtown! Jump...Might as well jump!

The Gun Went Off -- the art is unveiled and the Treasure Hunt is afoot.

Artists Unveil their Work---and invite all to join the GermanParistown Treasure Hunt!

Fantastic unveiling event and Treasure Hunt send off!

Speakers included Tandy, Fischer, Holtzman, Owen, Trawick... We got out "the big wood" and hit it out of the park.

If you don't know what we are talking about, come and see the public art at 1094 E. Kentucky, 40204. Then pick up a Treasure Hunt map and walk/drive the neighborhood. Maps are located at many locations, but the most notable would be Lynn's Paradise Cafe. Not only is the treasure hunt a fun outing, it also allows you to be eligible for some nice grand prizes...if you can decode the secret message!

Is it ready yet? NO!! One week to go...and project is in full heat!

Now we see the map on the sidewalk---Are you ready to walk the neighborhood with the awesome map? Go to various local businesses for a map starting Tuesday... e.g. Lynn's Paradise Cafe for one.

Unveiling is 10am, November 6th at the GPNA Center at 1094 E. Kentucky Street. Dignitaries and the artists will describe and unveil their best efforts. Music, snacks, networking.

Engagement is the buzzword. But a picture is worth 1000 words. Every aspect of this project has a story. At the unveiling, go up to one of the artisans and ask about any aspect of this. They will mesmorize. They will be filled with passion. They will engage you...and engage history...and engage a vision for the future.

Presentations about the Project

Synopsis of project has been presented at the Neighborhood Institute at a recent Center for Neighborhoods gathering. It was received well. People were willing to volunteer their wares and such. Check back later for links to this presentation and a video. Presenting this project in person is very effective. Presentations can be setup in Germantown churches, meeting places, lounges, etc. Let's stir up the pot and make things happen. "Art happens!"

P.A.I.N.T. Program Announces Funding for 1st Neighborhood-Based Public Art Project to take place in German-Paristown

Center For Neighborhoods is pleased to announce the award of $7,500 in funding for the first in a series of site-specific neighborhood-based public art projects under the umbrella of the P.A.I.N.T. Program (P.A.I.N.T. - Producing Art In Neighborhoods Together). The award is being granted to local visual artists Mary Dennis Kannapell and Marjie Ryan who collaboratively developed a project proposal for the German-Paristown neighborhood. Their project, titled “YOU ARE HERE - Linking the Past to the Present: Creating a Sense of Place” is slated to kick off this Saturday, June 26^th, at the 4^th Annual “Shotgun Fest” in the German-Paristown neighborhood.

According to artist Marjie Ryan, Phase 1 of the “You Are Here” project is focused on developing an appreciation of the “treasure of a distinct cultural and historical landscape, the German-Paristown Neighborhood”.

The artists proposed to explore the history of the neighborhood by uncovering people and places that significantly contributed to the establishment of German-Paristown. The project will culminate in the development of a “sculptural timepiece panel”, which is a site-specific art installation constructed of historic iron artifacts evoking the history, landscape, and residents of the neighborhood welded together and installed on a lot adjacent the German-Paristown Neighborhood Center. Additionally, the artists plan to paint the steps of the Neighborhood Center red and white (an historic tradition of the area), create a painted map of the neighborhood with a “You Are Here” star marking the viewer’s location in front of the building. Plans for a community-based interactive second phase of the “You Are Here” project will be revealed in the coming months.

“We are really excited about the ‘You Are Here’ project, and anxiously await the kick off event at the Shotgun Fest this Saturday,” said Hallie Jones, Director of Marketing and Development at the Center For Neighborhoods and also the P.A.I.N.T. Program Manager. “This is just the first of four super exciting neighborhood-based public art projects the P.A.I.N.T. program currently has in the planning stages. All of the projects will be based on collaboration between local artists and the residents of neighborhoods. Our ultimate goal is to create culturally relevant public artwork that encourages meaningful dialogue and builds community, while simultaneously supporting the vision of both neighborhoods and the visual arts.”

Nate Pederson, who is serving as the project facilitator for the German-Paristown Neighborhood Association, said the association is “thrilled because it combines the true spirit of collective engagement with the raw passion and skill of talented artisans. It’s a way for local leaders to improve their skills, as well as a means for the retiring and shy to get involved in their community in a fun way. It turns ethereal 'neighborhood pride' into the real and palpable.”

The public can meet the artists at their Shotgun Fest booth this coming Saturday, June 26^th, from Noon – 9:00 PM. They will be meeting and greeting residents to introduce the project, getting to know the community, and collecting contact information for individuals interested in becoming involved with the project. The artists are also announcing an open call for the submission of metal objects with historical relevance to the neighborhood. The artists are seeking donations of metal objects relevant to the history of the neighborhood to be incorporated as part of the “Sculptural Timepiece Panel”.

Center For Neighborhood’s “P.A.I.N.T. Program” was established in the summer of 2009 through a grant from Louisville Metro’s External Agency Fund for Arts and Culture. Center For Neighborhoods and the German-Paristown Neighborhood Association are both 501(c)3 non-profit organizations.

Phase 1 of this proposal intends to develop an appreciation of the treasure of a distinct cultural and historical landscape, the German-Paris Town Neighborhood, through several phases:
This first phase explores the history of the neighborhood by searching for the people and places that significantly contributed to the establishment of German-Paris Town. The search for those stories as told through collected metal artifacts will be culminate in a sculpture constructed partly of these assembled pieces of the neighborhood’s history.

•Sculptural Timepiece Panel: A site-specific art installation constructed of
historic iron artifacts and created elements evoking the GPN history, landscape
and residents, welded together and installed on the GPNA Center lot adjacent to
their building.

• Painted Red and White Steps (an historic tradition of the area) on the
Neighborhood Center, GPNA logo added to their front door, and a painted
“map” of the GPN area with a “You Are Here” star on the slanted cement
slope in front of the Center for passersby to view.
The second treasure finding phase will be revealed at a later date.
Ultimately the proposal will acquaint the German-Paris Town neighborhood and the larger community with a heightened awareness of its history and relevance, connect residents with each other, as well as their local businesses and services. The city of Louisville will also benefit from discovering a hidden neighborhood treasure.
